Permission to Rest: A Thanksgiving Reminder

Thanksgiving is here, and it’s the perfect time to reflect, relax, and reconnect with what truly matters. Many real estate agents struggle with stepping away from work, feeling guilty about taking a break. But here’s the truth: you have permission to rest. Your career is important, but it does not define you. This holiday, be present with your family, embrace gratitude, and allow yourself to recharge.

Work is Not Your Identity

Your job is a significant part of your life, but it is not your entire identity. James Clear’s words sum it up well: “The professional loves her work, but she does not forget that the work is not her.” This means you can set boundaries without guilt. You don’t need to answer your phone on Thanksgiving or check emails at the dinner table. Be fully present in the roles that matter—parent, friend, sibling, or host.

Balance Work and Rest

Many professionals struggle with the idea that they must earn rest. They push through exhaustion, believing relaxation must be justified by overworking. However, success isn’t about constant hustle. “When you’re on the field, play as if nothing else matters. When you’re off the field, remember that the game doesn’t matter at all.” Give your full effort when working, but when it’s time to rest, truly unplug.

Finish the Year Strong—But Wisely

As the year winds down, it’s tempting to either push through exhaustion or give up entirely. Instead, find a middle ground. Starting strong is good. Finishing strong is epic. Take time to reflect on the year, acknowledge your hard work, and plan for the future. The next few weeks offer a valuable window to set goals and prepare for a fresh start.

Lower Expectations, Embrace Simplicity

Perfection is overrated. Whether it’s how you wrap gifts or how you host Thanksgiving dinner, no one will remember the details. Give yourself permission to simplify. The real measure of success isn’t in flawless execution but in the joy and connection you create. If something brings you joy, do it. If not, let it go.

Gratitude and Reflection

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to pause and reflect. Gratitude shifts your mindset and helps you focus on what truly matters. Instead of stressing over work, take stock of the things that bring you fulfillment—family, friendships, health, and moments of peace.

Rest is Part of Success

Taking a break doesn’t mean you’re falling behind. It means you’re investing in yourself. “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including yourself.” Allow yourself the space to rest without guilt. Your business will still be there after Thanksgiving, and you’ll return with renewed energy and clarity.

Final Thoughts: Take the Break You Deserve

This Thanksgiving, step away from work and give yourself permission to rest. Your clients, deals, and to-do lists can wait. Be present with your loved ones, embrace gratitude, and recharge. The only people who will remember how hard you worked over the holiday are your family—and they deserve your full attention.
