Episode 4: Wearing Different Hats in Real Estate with Matt Hughes
Featuring guest Matt Hughes, President of the Greater Baton Rouge Association of REALTORS®
In this episode of Hustle Humbly, we welcome our first guest, Matt Hughes — a real estate professional who has truly done it all: team leader, coach, property manager, and sales agent. Today, we explore what it means to wear different hats in real estate and how Matt’s story can help you adapt, lead, and thrive through every market cycle.
Whether you’re dreaming of team leadership, diving into property management, or redefining your real estate path, this episode is packed with insight and inspiration to help you evolve without losing your focus or your sanity.
Starting Young and Jumping In
Matt knew at 17 that real estate was his calling. After early experience in furniture sales and travel, he returned home ready to commit — joining top producer Kayla Johnson as a buyer’s agent. During the 2008 market downturn, he pivoted into property management, gaining perspective on wearing different hats in real estate and learning that flexibility is a superpower when markets shift.
From Property Management to Team Leadership
At one point, Matt managed over 230 rental units and 40 homeowners’ associations. Although property management offered stability, he missed the thrill of sales. That pull eventually led him to become a Keller Williams team leader — coaching agents full-time and helping them find balance between business growth and personal well-being.
Returning to Sales with a New Vision
In 2018, Matt re-entered sales with a refreshed mindset. He reconnected with past clients, acknowledged past service gaps, and rebuilt trust. That humility sparked new referrals and listings. Today, his team operates with versatility — each member trained to handle both buyers and listings. It’s a modern take on wearing different hats in real estate that builds confidence, not burnout.
Team Building, Mindset & Motivation
We talk candidly about the realities agents face: burnout, boundaries, and misconceptions about “easy money.” Matt emphasizes that success comes from implementation speed, structure, and self-discipline — not chaos. He shares how setting realistic expectations and cultivating the right mindset keeps both leaders and agents thriving long-term.
The Power of Humble Growth
Katy and Alyssa open up about their own transitions — from solo agents to business owners. Katie reflects on her unconventional college journey, while Alyssa shares what hiring her first assistant taught her about delegation and mindset. Together, they affirm that real estate growth is not linear — it’s about learning when to lead, when to follow, and when to rest.
Toast of the Episode: Alisa Bankston
We raise our glasses to Matt’s team member, Alisa Bankston, whose dedication and enthusiasm embody the spirit of Hustle Humbly. Cheers to Alisa for her commitment to growth and teamwork!
