Should You Separate Personal and Professional Instagram Accounts as a Realtor?

When it comes to social media for Realtors, one of the most common questions we get is: “Should I have two accounts—one personal, one for real estate?”

It sounds like a simple logistics decision, but the truth is, this question has way more to do with mindset than account types.

Personal vs. Professional Instagram for Realtors

If you’re hesitating to post your personal hobbies, your family life, or your authentic thoughts online, you might be falling into the “real estate robot” trap. The idea that you have to be 100% business to be seen as a “professional” is outdated and, frankly, ineffective.

The reality? People don’t log into Instagram to see listing flyers. They want to connect, be entertained, and feel inspired. They want to know who you are. And when you show up with your real self—whether you’re a sourdough girlie or a scuba fan—you give them something to connect with.

Which Instagram Account Type Is Best?

Here’s a quick breakdown of the three main account types:

  • Personal: Best for casual users. Limited insights and tools.

  • Professional: Geared toward businesses and brands. Some analytics and monetization tools.

  • Creator: Made for influencers and content creators. Full music access, collab tools, analytics.

Most Realtors will benefit from a creator or professional account, but the type of account matters less than the content you’re posting.

Content Strategy That Works

The algorithm isn’t hiding your content because of your account type. It’s all about the content quality. If your posts are too salesy, repetitive, or generic, people won’t engage—no matter what your account says.

Instead:

  • Mix personal and professional content

  • Show your face in your profile and posts

  • Share your real life (yes, even the hobbies!)

  • Tag local places and businesses

  • Keep things simple and authentic

Social Media Burnout Is Real

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by social media, you’re not alone. Alissa recently took a two-week break from Instagram—and not a single person noticed. That’s your permission slip to pause if you need to.

At the end of the day, people want to support people. When you show up with your real voice, interests, and yes, personality, your ideal clients will find you.
