Things Realtors Can and Can’t Control (and How to Keep Your Sanity)

In a shifting market, the stress on Realtors can feel like too much. You’re working harder than ever, doing everything “right,” and still—no offers. It’s tempting to tie your success and self-worth to outcomes, but that mindset will wear you down fast.

Here’s the truth: there are a lot of things Realtors can’t control. But there are just as many (if not more!) that you can.

What You Can’t Control

It’s time to stop wasting energy on things outside of your control, like:

  • Interest rates and the economy
  • Inventory, pricing trends, or natural disasters
  • Whether a buyer or seller accepts your advice
  • Other agents’ behavior
  • Whether someone leaves feedback
  • Life events that derail deals (yes, even unexpected knee surgeries)

The more you try to control these things, the more powerless—and burnt out—you’ll feel. Let them go.

What You Can Control

Now for the good news. Realtors have control over more than they realize:

  • Communication and follow-up: Regular, thoughtful updates make a big difference. One heartfelt video message can do more than five emails.
  • Client education and expectations: It’s your job to speak the truth, deliver data, and guide your clients with confidence.
  • Boundaries and workload: You get to decide how many clients you take on and what your schedule looks like.
  • Systems and organization: Whether it’s Friday updates or a weekly check-in routine, your systems create consistency and sanity.
  • Your mindset: Gratitude, positivity, and self-awareness are the secret weapons in this business.

You’re Doing Better Than You Think

Many agents feel like failures when the house doesn’t sell or the deal falls apart. But doing your job with professionalism, honesty, and care is success—even if the outcome isn’t what you hoped.

You can’t wave a magic wand and make every house sell. But you can show up for your clients, provide stellar service, and stay in control of your own energy and effort.

And that’s what being a great agent is really about.
